In late 2021, I left an active trial practice (and occasional service as a mediator) that I had maintained for more than 33 years to establish a full-time mediation practice. Over the last 20+ years of that time, a running joke among those who worked with me was “what type of trouble are you dealing with this time?” This “joke” reflected the varied nature of my practice. I was most often dealing with death and serious injury cases, many involving product liability claims, but also maintained an active docket of commercial, real estate, construction, and insurance cases. My experience in these areas was recognized by my listing under both Product Liability and Commercial Litigation by Best Lawyers in America and a poll of San Antonio lawyers (as published in Scene in SA magazine). Right or wrong, I always felt that this practice-area diversity kept me focused on continued learning and prevented me from becoming too comfortable. It also provided valuable insight into how to tackle the complicated issues facing parties to litigation – including paths to resolution, potential hurdles, and creative solutions to overcome those hurdles.
Let’s be frank – the vast majority of cases settle before trial. In that sense, resolution skills are as important as trial skills – though they are often overlooked. I am proud to look back now and know that my clients recognized my resolution skills and often commented on them. Helping parties resolve their disputes is a passion and one that I now pursue exclusively. I hope that you will trust me with your dispute.
